Scarecrow and XP

Scarecrows are Outfield progression engine. Destroy them to earn XP, trigger level-ups, and access random upgrades that define how long you survive on procedural maps. Break them at the wrong time and you feed the sound-hunting enemy a perfect vector. Break them at the right time and you outscale the threat before its evolution peaks.

This guide covers when to hit scarecrows, how to route across random layouts, and how XP pacing connects to Upgrades and Builds and the future Tier List. Read Stealth and Sound first if noise basics are still fuzzy.

What scarecrows give you

Each destroyed scarecrow drops XP toward your next level. Level-ups present random upgrade choices — the roguelite power spike that separates a short run from a deep one. You are not collecting scarecrows for flavor; you are buying power with sound risk.

Because you only carry one gun, XP upgrades are your primary scaling tool. Under-leveling feels like peashooter damage and fragile stamina. Over-greeding scarecrows without relocation gets you killed before upgrades matter. Balance is the whole game.

The noise trade-off every break makes

Scarecrow destruction is loud relative to walking. The enemy hears that event. Treat each break as a contract:

  1. I know where I will move after XP pops
  2. I have visual or audio cover for the next five seconds
  3. I am not chaining a second scarecrow unless the sector is cold

If any line fails, skip the scarecrow and bank map knowledge for later. Getting Started stresses the same rule for first runs — patience beats XP FOMO.

Route planning on procedural maps

Maps are procedural, so memorized speedrun lines from other games do not port directly. Instead, use principles:

Edge-first clearing. Walk field borders to identify scarecrow clusters without crossing the center early. Centers often have longer sightlines and fewer audio shadows.

Break outward-in. Clear scarecrows near exits first so later breaks happen closer to escape vectors, not deeper in dead ends.

Weather windows. During rain, sound masking may allow tighter chains — see Stealth and Sound for limits. During clear night, take fewer breaks per sector.

Day/night cycling. If day gives vision, scout scarecrow locations you will break at night when you cannot see as well.

Use Tools route checklists if you want a repeatable template until you internalize the rhythm.

XP pacing vs enemy evolution

The hunter evolves over time within a run. XP pacing must match that curve:

  • Early run: prioritize safe single breaks to grab your first defensive or mobility upgrade
  • Mid run: increase break rate only if upgrades already help relocation or noise control
  • Late run: avoid starting new scarecrow chains unless you need one final power spike to finish an objective

If encounters accelerate after each break, you are likely outpacing your stealth skill, not earning too little XP. Slow down, vary paths, and read Upgrades and Builds for picks that stabilize mid-run.

Synergy with upgrades

Not every level-up helps farming. Broad categories to watch for once launch data lands on the Tier List:

  • Mobility — reach the next scarecrow and leave before the hunter arrives
  • Noise mitigation — shrink the detection radius of breaks or footsteps
  • Damage efficiency — fewer shots per scarecrow means fewer gunshot blips
  • Survivability — survive a mistake when a break goes wrong

Random offers mean you cannot force a perfect build. When two picks seem equal, choose the one that fixes your last death reason — that is usually smarter than chasing theoretical best DPS.

Common XP mistakes

Chain breaking in one pocket. Three scarecrows in a cluster tempt greedy players. The hunter receives stacked location data. Break one, relocate, reset audio.

Breaking during reload or low stamina. Vulnerable animation windows plus noise equals free kills for the AI.

Ignoring weather shifts. Rain ending mid-chain removes your masking advantage at the worst moment.

Skipping XP entirely. Ultra-stealth runs that never level fall off when enemy evolution ramps. You need some scarecrows — just not every scarecrow.

Post-patch tracking

Developers may tune XP per scarecrow, level thresholds, or spawn density. Always cross-check Updates after patches before trusting old routes from stream VODs. Codes rarely affect XP but may add cosmetics that confuse scarecrow silhouettes — verify on the Codes page only when official strings exist.

Suggested practice session

  1. Start a run and mark three scarecrows on your mental map without breaking them.
  2. Break only the safest one using walk-in, shoot, walk-out timing from Controls.
  3. Pick the upgrade that helps relocation or noise if offered.
  4. Note the time between break and next audio cue.
  5. Repeat until you can predict when greed becomes lethal.

Master scarecrow pacing and Outfield stops feeling like random horror — it becomes a resource game you control.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Why destroy scarecrows in Outfield?

Scarecrows grant XP that levels you up and offers random upgrades. Without scarecrow XP, you fall behind enemy evolution.

Are scarecrows loud enough to attract the enemy?

Yes. Breaking them creates a significant noise event. Plan an escape route before destroying one.

Should I break every scarecrow on the map?

No. Over-farming in one area stacks detection risk. Break safely, relocate, and skip risky clusters.

Does weather affect scarecrow farming?

Rain can mask sound, enabling slightly bolder breaks. Clear nights require tighter pacing and fewer chains.

What upgrades help scarecrow routes?

Mobility, noise reduction, and faster kills all help. See Upgrades and Builds and the Tier List for ranked picks after launch.

Will XP values change after launch?

Possible. Patch notes in Updates are the source of truth if scarecrow XP or level requirements are rebalanced.
