Outfield Upgrade Run Planner

Draft milestone priorities before RNG forces a panic pick in the field.

Last updated:

Outfield’s roguelite progression asks you to destroy scarecrows, bank XP, and choose among random upgrades at milestones—options described publicly include movement speed, ammunition improvements, and additional stat boosts. The Upgrade Run Planner is a structured worksheet on this wiki that turns those decisions into a pre-run contract: primary picks, acceptable backups, and weather pivots you can follow when the upgrade screen appears mid-chase.

The planner does not connect to the game client. Copy sections into a notes app or print this page after filling it mentally. Pair it with ranked reasoning on Best Upgrades and an archetype from Build Recommendations.

Step 1 — Choose your archetype

Pick one baseline build before queueing Steam:

ArchetypePrimary stat focusLink
Quiet StalkerNoise reduction, crouch speedBuild Recommendations
Rain RiderAmmo + speed during stormsSame
Ammo MiserMagazine and XP efficiencySame
Night ScoutVision before duskSame
High-Risk BreakerDamage during rain windowsSame

Write the archetype name at the top of your personal planner sheet. Every milestone question below filters through that choice.

Step 2 — Define milestone tiers

Exact milestone counts are unknown pre-release; plan in early, mid, and late phases by relative scarecrow progress instead of hard level numbers.

Early phase (first third of intended run)

Primary wants: Noise control or ammunition economy—whichever your archetype lists first.

Backup accepts: Health or recovery, mild speed without sprint habits, basic vision if a night cycle starts early on your seed.

Hard declines: Fire rate or damage unless no stealth or economy option appears twice consecutively.

Mid phase (middle third)

Primary wants: Complement early pick—if you took silence, grab ammo; if you took ammo, grab silence.

Backup accepts: Scarecrow interaction speed, conditional speed for hunter disengage.

Pivot trigger: If rain ended and night approaches without vision investment, break archetype once for low-light tools.

Late phase (final third / record push)

Primary wants: Speed or recovery to handle escalating hunter behavior described on Steam.

Backup accepts: Any remaining S-tier type from Best Upgrades you still lack.

Hard declines: Greed picks that increase noise without shortening time-to-next scarecrow.

Step 3 — Weather and time contingencies

Fill this quick table on your notes before spawning:

ConditionPlanner adjustment
Rain active at startRain Rider rules: schedule louder scarecrow clears inside storm audio cover
Clear daylightDefault archetype rules; prioritize economy before speed
Night approachingNight Scout override: next milestone must include vision unless rain guaranteed
Post-patch audio changesRe-read Patch Notes row for footstep or gunfire tuning

Step 4 — Offer evaluation script

When the real upgrade UI appears, read offers top to bottom using this script aloud or in chat:

  1. Does any offer reduce future noise or shots needed? If yes, lean that pick for Quiet Stalker and Ammo Miser.
  2. Am I entering night blind? If yes, vision wins unless rain masking is active.
  3. Did the hunter chase me in the last two minutes? If yes, speed or recovery jumps priority.
  4. Do two offers duplicate the same stat? Take the higher-impact category once; skip the duplicate unless both are S-tier types you lack entirely.
  5. Would this pick contradict my last milestone? Avoid triple-stacking damage without stealth infrastructure.

Log which offer you took and which you skipped after the run ends. Ten logged runs reveal personal RNG bias faster than theory alone.

Step 5 — Post-run review

After each attempt, answer four review prompts:

  • Which milestone pick saved the run?
  • Which pick caused the loudest mistake chain?
  • Did weather behave as expected from Preview Review assumptions?
  • Should I change archetype next run?

Promote repeated successes into default planner rows; demote picks that look good on paper but fail under your hunter pressure skill level.

Sample filled planner (theoretical)

Archetype: Quiet Stalker

Early primary: Noise reduction → Backup: Ammo capacity → Decline: Fire rate

Mid primary: Ammo if early was silence; reverse if early was ammo → Backup: Vision if dusk timer under five minutes

Late primary: Recovery or speed → Decline: Duplicate damage

Weather note: If rain within first ten minutes, push one extra scarecrow cluster before relocating quietly.

Adjust numbers after launch when community data confirms milestone spacing.

Integration with other wiki tools

Run Survival Checklist at session start to enforce movement rules that make upgrade choices matter. Check Updates Hub on patch days before copying last week’s planner template unchanged.

New players should complete Getting Started once before relying on milestone scripts—planner steps assume you can route scarecrows without constant map confusion.

Limitations

RNG may offer three low-tier damage bonuses with no stealth tools. The planner’s job is to tell you when breaking archetype is correct, not to pretend ideal offers always appear. Procedural maps also mean scarecrow density varies; phase timings are relative, not clock-based.

After Release Date passes, revisit this page for community-sourced milestone counts and rename phases with real level numbers when verified.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do I need to fill every section every run?

Short sessions can use only early-phase rows. Long record attempts benefit from full early, mid, and late planning.

What if all three offers are damage upgrades?

Take the least noisy damage option once, then force stealth or economy on the next milestone per your archetype backup rules.

Can I share planner templates?

Yes. Community archetype sheets help newcomers; note patch date and game version when sharing.

Will milestone counts be added after launch?

We will update this tool with verified level breakpoints once players confirm them in-game.
